Strovolos has its own green spot - The 8th green spot in Nicosia was inaugurated - A Mobile Green Spot will soon operate - "Rational waste management is part of the broader strategy" said Minister of Agriculture Costas Kadis at the inauguration ceremony
The inauguration of the Green Point in Strovolos was held this morning in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, the Mayor of Strovolos and other mayors of the wider region, while a consecration was also performed by the Bishop of Messaoria Gregory.
Speaking at the inauguration event, the Minister of Agriculture stressed, among other things, the need to ensure the protection of the environment and human health.
"It is indeed a great pleasure to be here today at the inauguration of the green spot in Strovolos. The challenges are many and the issue of waste management is a huge challenge and I believe that through proper planning and good cooperation we can implement the right solutions," said the Minister of Agriculture. The operation of the green point we are launching today is part of our wider strategy for the rational management of waste. A strategy which recognises the urgent need to reduce waste production, promote separate collection, reuse, recycling and reduce landfill. The achievement of these objectives is a long-term planning, with the main concern to ensure the protection of the environment and human health and, by extension, the achievement of the personal targets required by the new European directives on waste management", stressed Mr. Kadis.
A decades-old problem...
Strovolos Mayor Andreas Papacharalambous said that the green spots come to provide a solution to a huge problem of decades.
"It is with great pleasure that I welcome you today to the inauguration of the Strovolos Green Point, one of the eight Green Points of the Nicosia District, which became operational last April, in the framework of the implementation of the European Directive for the optimal recovery of Household Waste."
As Mr Papacharalambous said, the choice of this key point, the Green Point Strovolos has the potential to serve not only the citizens of Strovolos, but also our fellow citizens from the surrounding areas.
"Due to the spatial and population size of Nicosia District, the needs are great and the number of points is small. For this reason, our efforts in recent months have been focused and intensified in order for the State to create a sufficient number of Green Points - fixed and mobile - in order to better serve our fellow citizens. The Green Spots come to provide a solution to a huge problem that has plagued our country for decades, the illegal and uncontrolled dumping of household waste. The result, unfortunately, of an ugly mentality of some of our fellow citizens, who consciously, and knowing the illegality of their actions, choose to dump their household waste on empty lots, fields, sidewalks, in front of schools and in front of the yards of unsuspecting citizens, and even in municipal parks and other public spaces. The time has finally come for these attitudes and bad practices to end for good. Our modern society is Environmentally and Socially aware and does not allow the perpetuation of such unscrupulous attitudes. It does not allow the lack of respect for our fellow human beings, it does not allow the violation of the right of all of us to live in a clean and healthy environment because of the behaviour of a small portion of our fellow citizens" said the Strovolos Mayor.
Apart from the Strovolos Green Point, the other seven operating points are:
- Area "Ergaton"
- Kokkinotrimithia
- Peristeronas
- Astromeritis
- Linou
- Alambras
- Malountas
A Mobile Green Point will soon be operational.
All Green Points are staffed with experienced personnel. The Green Spots are managed by Citipost through an open public tender conducted by the Council.
